Objective: This study is aimed at identifying MMSE-DS scores in line with the demographic characteris-tics (gender, age, education) of senior citizens residing in Yongin City`s local community. This study is also intended to explain the necessity of developing a ``Cognitive Function enhance--ment Program`` to prevent the dementia of local senior citizens.
Methods: The study subjects are 126 senior citizens residing in K-gu, Yongin City in Gyeonggi-do. The research was conducted from July 25 to August 9 in 2011. MMSE-DS is a cognitive function assessment tool that solves the limitations of MMSE, reflects the demographic characteristics of Korean senior citizens, and has a high accuracy of diagnosing dementia.
Results: Among the 126 participants, the ratio of women was much higher at 73.01 % (92 people) than that of men at 26.99% (34). In a comparison in line with demographic characteristics, the scores of women were generally lower than those of men. The scores were lower among older and less-educated individuals. However, there was no big difference between men and women depending on their education, despite the difference depending on gender. In terms of age, the cognitive function assessment scores were significantly lower among older individuals.
Conclusion: The demographic characteristics (sex, age, and education) have proved to exercise significant influence on the level of cognitive function with the elderly in the local community. Therefore, it is important to prevent dementia caused by lowered cognitive function, and it is necessary to develop "cognitive function development`` that includes cognitive tasks like visuoconstruc-tional function.
